“Healthy Choices, Healthy Me!: A 2nd Grade lesson in Nutrition”…?
At the end of school, the kids always come home with all their remaining schoolwork: homework, classwork, art projects. You know, what they learned.
My daughter came home with this:
Do you notice anything? Anything at all seem weird to you?
12 portions of Dairy?! and 14 of Grains, Breads & Cereals?!
Is this what they are teaching them? Do school teachers really believe these are the RIGHT portions?
I have to say, my jaw was AGAPE. So I showed it to Dr. Eric. He immediately checked to see what organization was responsible for printing this school lesson. Sure enough the bottom reads: “c. 2006 Dairy Council of California revised in 2009.” Oye.
No wonder our children are getting diabetes. No wonder America is FAT. Let’s subjugate them YOUNG to the evil empire of corporate financing and GREED shall we? After all this is America and we are out to make a buck or two! Don’t worry, kids are “resilient!” Let’s just make them a little bit sick, so we can sell them more medicine…can LAUSD really be bought so easily?
One of the first things that Dr. Eric and I tell our friends, patients and family is: Eliminate wheat and dairy from your diet. Really, no matter what. You do not have to have Celiac’s or be lactose intolerant in order to decide this.
Cow dairy is NOT good for you. No, it does not give you strong bones. It does not help you grow taller. It does not have lots of calcium in it. Cow milk is for baby COWS. And it is nothing but SUGAR. If it is calcium that you want, look to your leafy green vegetables. In the above chart, the VEGETABLES portion should be 12 or 14. Remember Popeye? “I’m strong to the finish, ’cause I eats me SPINACH. I’m Popeye the sailor man. Toot toot!” (Maybe he isn’t so good at grammar, and maybe he will get lung cancer from the corncob pipe, but he gets an A in biology.)
Cow milk also makes a person phlegmy. Have you ever noticed how your nose gets stuffy, or you sneeze, or you wheeze, or you cough after eating or drinking it? Have to “hock a lugie?” Ice cream, coffee, cheese, milk, chocolate milk, creme brulee, etc…pay attention next time, you’ll see. Most pediatricians are so quick to put little kids on antibiotics, prescribe inhalers, or insert ear tubes in order to avoid childhood bronchitis, ear infections, and asthma. Or to avoid spring allergies folks should use claratin, chlor-trimeton or benedryl. Sure those work. But first, take the kid off wheat and dairy. Just try it. Betcha the symptoms lessen.
Not to mention that most milk these days, especially the inexpensive kind, comes from cows treated with BGH (Bovine Growth Hormone), given excessive antibiotics, not raised free range, grain fed rather than grass fed, and fed GMO corn no less. A recipe for ILLNESS. Have you seen the pictures of what happens to lab rats who were fed GMO corn? If the cows eat it, it’s in the milk. It’s in us too.
Oh and I’m sorry…14 helpings a day of Bread, Cereals & Grains? Well, grains I can abide. Whole sprouted grains preferably. Gluten Free grains even better! Oats, Rice, Quinoa, Spelt, Amaranth, etc. Whole Grains have a significant source of B vitamins, iron, folate, magnesium, and selenium. And good fiber too. But at school they don’t say WHOLE GRAINS. No, rather white bread, Teddy Grahams, and Cheerios count. Especially nutritionally vacant cereals like Lucky Charms, for example. (Why cereal? oh right, because it needs MILK on it. Duh! Let’s not forget todays lesson is sponsored by the Dairy Council of California! wink wink). Sorry Charlie. Highly processed bleached and treated breads, grains and cereal aren’t the same thing. BTW, Wheat also breaks down to SUGAR in the blood stream. Sugar with sugar on top anyone? yummy….
Do kids really need 26 helpings of SUGAR a day?
I’m not even getting started on the Gluten Issue. Or should I? Just quickly, Celiac’s or no, Gluten is INDIGESTIBLE by ALL HUMAN BEINGS. Whether that presents itself as serious disease now, or later, depends on your body’s hereditary ability to deal with it. But, after eating wheat or gluten just take a notice. Some get bloated, some get IBS, some get sluggish and tired, some get Crohn’s Disease, Diabetes, Autoimmune disorders, or Hashimoto’s, joint inflammation, chronic fatigue syndrome, but over time, it does cause DISEASE.
I always wondered why at EVERY SINGLE school or kids’ function it is PIZZA on the menu. I guess by LAUSD standards this is meeting the Percent Daily Value of the Food Triangle. Jeesh, this is so Mid-Century! Archaic, outdated and WRONG.
So we come to one of the primary reasons why we, Dr. Eric and our family, are so actively invested in both community and school gardens. Why we shamelessly plug events and fundraisers for all the local Gardens…
I feel SO VERY GRATEFUL to the Master Gardeners, Nora Dvosin & Nancy Giffin at Westminster Elementary who back in 2002, walked in to my son’s school at Westminster Elementary in Venice, and offered to start a school garden. WE Garden is THRIVING now. You will find it full of local volunteers and amazing local farmers, restauranteurs, and businesses who donate their time and energy to teaching the kids the RIGHT way to eat. Kids learn how to plant, raise, and eat what they grow themselves and even better, what they learn in the classroom is relevant to the real world and living in it. Thank you to Alice Waters at The Edible Schoolyard in Berkeley for the same. Thank you to our newfound friends at Emerson Avenue Community Garden at Orville Wright Middle School. And Mrs. Pourroy, Cali’s second grade teacher this year… thank you for taking the kids to EACGC on an end of the year field trip. I know you do all you can do to supplement the lacking LAUSD nutritional lessons. Let’s get that Kentwood Garden started!
Finally, thank you to YOU for taking the time to read this rant. I had to unload. The assignment that Cali brought home on the last day of school made me soooOOOoooo frustrated!
Please, teach your children well….
